Woodturning 101, Introduction To Wood Turning (MDAE course number #95744034)
Time: September 9 – December 9, 2010, (no classes 10/07, 11/04, & 12/02)
Duration: Nine weeks, 3 hours per week, Thursday, 6:00 – 9:00 PM
Requirements: Personal safety gear provided
Rate: $108.00
Description: This course introduces students to the art and processes of turning wood on the lathe. We will cover basic cuts, tools and techniques and safe lathe operations. During this course several projects will be completed selected to advance skill development and have fun. Special focus will be on the use of the shallow fluted gouge and skew chisel. Tool sharpening will also be taught.

Woodturning 201, Turning Wood Bowls (MDAE course number #95744032)
Time September 16 – December 2, 2010 (no classes 11/11 & 11/25)
Duration:Ten weeks, 3 hours per week, Thursday, 9:00AM – 12:00PM
Requirements: Personal safety gear provided
Rate: $120.00
Description: This course continues basic wood turning instruction begun with Woodturning 101, Introduction To Wood Turning. Students will turn both green wood and dry wood bowls. Instruction will include information on harvesting and preparing locally grown wood for bowl blanks. The primarily tool will be the deep-fluted bowl gouge and bowl scrapers. Tool sharpening will also be taught.

Woodturning 301, Advanced Bowl Turning Techniques (MDAE course number #95744088)
Time: September 17 – December 3, 2010
Duration: Ten weeks, 3 hours per week, Friday, 9:00 AM – 12:00PM
Prerequisite: Woodturning 201 or permission of instructor
Rate: $120.00
Description: This course continues training started in Woodturning 201, Turning Wood Bowls. Study will focus on working with green wood, natural edged bowls, thin wall bowls and platters. Instruction will include mounting techniques and surface embellishment. The tools of use will primarily be the deep-fluted bowl gouge and bowl and platter scrapers.

Woodturning 401, Boxes and Hollow Vessels (MDAE course number # (95744046)
Time: September 22 – December 01, 2010
Duration: Ten weeks, 3 hours per week, Wednesday, 6:00 – 9:00 PM
Prerequisite: Woodturning 101 or permission of instructor
Rate: $120.00
Description: The class will work with end grain projects, requiring different tools and turning skills. Boxes require precision turning, constructing jam chucks; turning hollow vessels require developing “blind turning” techniques using specialized hollowing tools (provided).

Introduction to Wood Lathes (Turning 101)
Duration: One full day.
Requirements: None.

Description: A beginning course in the safe use of the wood lathe and its tools including completion of a bud vase project.

Turning Finished-Edge Bowls
Duration: One full day.
Requirements: Completion of basic lathe skills training.
Rate: Contact Woodcraft, Dublin CA for schedule, costs, and reservations.
Description: A beginning course on the use of the bowl gouge by turning a finished edge dry wood bowl using both a scroll chuck and a jam chuck.

Turning Natural-Edge Bowls
Duration: One full day.
Requirements:Completion of basic lathe skills training, and experience in turning finished-edged bowls.

Description: An intermediate course on bowl turning focusing on proper mounting, centering, adjusting and thin wall turning.

Two Pens In One Day
Duration: Full day.
Requirements: Basic wood lathe skills.

Description: An introduction to turning wood pens from purchased kits. Focus will be on the steps, tools and process for two of the most popular kit fowls. Class will also address different finishing techniques include the CA glue finish.

Making Hollow Christmas Ornaments
Duration: Two day.
Requirements: Basic wood lathe skills.

Description: A two-day course focused on making hollow ornaments with small detailed finials. The first day will focus on making the necessary tools for hollowing small ornament balls. The second day will cover making the ornaments including hollowing, turning finials, and assembling.

Using the Skew Chisel
Duration: Half day.
Requirements: Intermediate turning skills.

Description:A course focused on developing specific skills in mastering the five basic cuts of the skew chisel. Course will also discuss sharpening and honing techniques.

Sharpening Lathe Tools
Duration: Half day.
Requirements: Basic wood lathe skills and lots of dull turning tools.
